The Special Olympics Kennedy Shriver Legacy
The JayCees of Washington County started Washington County Special Olympics back in the early 1990s. They funded the money & Jim Mann, an adaptive PE teacher, was basically in charge. At that time, Marva Davis was helping Jim with the athletes. Jim's wife was pregnant with their first child, and he told Marva that once his child was born, he'd be giving up his position coaching & directing. At the time, all the athletes were involved in w was the Summer Games, so she said, "Sure I can handle that." Then she got a summons from Special Olympics Maryland and discovered that much more had to be handled. She left that meeting with a pile of documents and books showing what all had to be done. She got back to Hagerstown and called a bunch of her friends to a meeting at a Chinese Restaurant and the Management Team was born! It's still going strong more than twenty years later!
